In the late 1980s, Lisa co-founded the Vancouver-based band "Against the Grain" with songwriting partner Bryan Duke, performing alongside accomplished musicians Don Kelley (bass) and Tim “Sugar” Sommers (drums). As the band’s lyricist and lead vocalist, Lisa also wrote several original songs. The band performed regularly in Vancouver and surrounding areas and secured FACTOR funding to support the recording of their work.
After relocating to Toronto in 1990, Lisa and Bryan formed a new band, "Freedom Rains", describing their sound as “rockadelic blujazz”—a style of original pop music influenced by blues, jazz, folk, and psychedelic rock. The band evolved over several iterations, and with the addition of John McLaughlin (bass) and Gino Mirizio (drums), recorded two albums. The first was produced with James Paul, and the second with Charlie Ringas of Supermono Records. The material for these recordings was written between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s.
Lisa continues to write lyrics as an integral part of her solo theatre creations.
